Stocking up to take up the slack

Whenever Resistance is discussed, somebody always manages to bring up the subject that there are 22 million licensed hunters in the US, good luck with taking our guns.
Yeah, right. There's 22 million hunters, most of them once a year hunters and fired their rifles once at a range to zero and can't hit shit anyways, and nearly all of them possessing less than 2 boxes of ammo per gun.
That's fucked up. We're gonna lose 21 million hunters right out the gate when they shoot their 27 rounds of ammo they had on hand and suddenly they have $800 clubs in their hands, and that's if they have the balls to resist in the first place.
Right now you can buy 5.56 & 7.62 dirt cheap - check my 'Shit that might come in handy' column - especially in bulk. Don't worry about excessive postage, it's fixed rate and pretty damned reasonable. There's also handgun ammo, both bulk and small amounts, at other sites that are worth taking advantage of. You can buy a box of ammo a week and build up your stash that way, if you think you have the time, but it doesn't hurt to lay in a few hundred rounds from time to time.
When the time comes, are you gonna be one of the guys that blindly fired his box and a half of bullets and hit nothing or are you going to be the one stocked up with food and ammo having the time of his life?
Your choice, man.

My day. So far.

Yeah, fuck man, I got over to the in law's house and almost cried when I saw that trailer. It was packed from top to bottom, nose to tail. I say packed..... it looked like it was loaded with a fucking front end loader. Light shit on the bottom, heavy shit up on top, everything shifted all over the place.
I had told Lisa the night before that we'd be done unloading the trailer by noon and I carried the last box out at 11:45.
Al had brought some of Lisa's furniture out here from Tennessee and it took 2 pickups to haul it over here. While Al was here, I went out to the backyard to get some pavers for him to cover some holes under his fence until he can rototil the backyard. The pavers were in a pile next to the Justice Shed and when I reached down to grab one I felt a sting on my finger. Fuck, I'm widder-bit. No shit, I pulled my hand up and there was the biggest black widow I've seen in a long time chewing on my finger.
Bitch. I shook it off and killed it, then went in to wash my hands and soak my finger in alcohol. Don't know if that does any good for the poison but it sounded like a good idea.
So now I'm sitting here waiting for my finger to turn black and blue and fall off. Actually, I hope it doesn't fall off, it was my bird finger and I can't drive without that finger, man. Feeling a little pukey, but I haven't been feeling that great for the past day or two anyways so I don't know if it's the bite or just not feeling well.
But it's been about an hour now and except for some swelling and some tingling, I'm all right. Fucking pussy spiders are overrated as hell. I figured it would at least hurt a little bit.

Well, off to help the in-laws move.
It's not actually that bad, the truck was delivered with all their furniture in it to their house, all we have to to is unload it.
And while I generally try to avoid at all costs to help people move, they are my in-laws and they've been staying with us for the past two weeks. In case you're a little slow this morning, let me repeat the key phrase- they've been staying with us for the past 2 weeks.

I remember one time about 25 years ago.....

I remember one time about 25 years ago I was driving down a dirt road and in a clearing about 25 yards away there were two guys crouched down head to head. I was feeling particularly sociable that morning so I pulled off and wandered over to offer them a cup of hot coffee as it had been raining pretty good for a couple days.
When I got over to them, I could see they were trying to build a fire and having damned little success at it. I also noticed they were dressed completely in Royal Robbins clothes and all their gear was North Face and not only that, all that shit was brand fucking new. I mean it was so new you could still smell it. No creases yet in their fancy hiking boots, no scuffs or dirt on their packs, no rumples in their hats and most noticeably, no fucking fire.
My keen senses told me that they were new to this.
They had pieces of rotten wood and wet tinder and had just about run their lighter out of fuel trying to ignite it. They had started to burn shit from their wallets trying to coax that little flame to life.
I offered them a cup of coffee and when they accepted, I went back to the truck for my thermos, a couple of canteen cups and my firemaking equipment.
"Y'all are fucking up." I informed them. "It's cold and wet and nasty and you didn't even bring the stuff to build you a fire. May I show you the proper way?"
They looked at each other, then at me - long hair tied back, bearded, Carhartt coat, Wranglers and well worn lace up ropers on my feet, not only that but there wasn't a bit of color to me. No fancy fluorescent clothing, no fancy brand name shit but looking pretty much at home standing under a tree staying dry while they huddled in the clearing getting rained on.
"Um, sure. We're just having a little problem with our fire because it's wet."
"And because you ain't quite got a grip on things yet, Stud. Lookee here, your shit's all wet because you don't know where to look for dry wood. And even if you did find dry wood, it's getting wet because you're trying to build a fire in a clearing in a rainstorm. Come back here under this nice tree and start over."
"Oh no, we don't want to start a forest fire" they said.
"You can't even start a campfire and you're worried about burning down the woods? It's been raining hard for 2-3 days now, man. It'll be okay, really it will."
They explained that they wanted to give camping a shot and thought because it was still nice and warm down in LA, they figured it would be nice and cool up here and that they just weren't prepared but because they'd traveled so far they didn't want to waste the trip. Rain never even figured into their plans. They had used all their brought-from-home tinder trying to light wet wood and now they were fucked. They were giving up, fuck it, spend a miserable night in the car and head for home in the morning.
"Ah, the 4P Principle" I said.
"4P Principle?"
"Piss Poor Prior Planning. Come on, let's save this trip." I led them back into the forest a little bit, showed them where to find dry tinder and kindling and headed back to the truck for some 550 cord and a tarp while they gathered fuel for their fire.
When I got back to them I unfolded the tarp and set it up between some trees, then showed them how to prepare a campfire. When I was sure they had it down I asked one of them for a light and he hands me the used up lighter.
Oh well, time for me to show off my woodsman's skills. I pulled my firemaking gear out, popped that road flare and shoved it right in the middle of their nest of tinder and kindling. "Works every time" was all I said.
Fuck, I thought they were going to stroke up right there on the spot - "That's cheating!!!"
"Yeah? It ain't no less warm. It'll be all right once the flare burns out and the smoke goes away."

My lessons in outdoor life must've paid off because when I went back past there the next day, they were there and dry and warm and having a good ol' time doing nothing but drinking bourbon.

The point to this story? There ain't none, I was just doing a little remembering and thought I'd share.

Faithful past the end



An extremely dedicated dog has continued to show its loyalty, keeping watch on its owner's grave six years after he passed away.
Capitan, a German shepherd, reportedly ran away from home after its owner, Miguel Guzman, died in 2006. A week later, the Guzman family found the dog sitting by his grave in central Argentina.
Miguel Guzman adopted Capitan in 2005 as a gift for his teenage son, Damian. And for the past six years, Capitan has continued to stand guard at Miguel's grave. The family says the dog rarely leaves the site.
"We searched for him, but he had vanished," widow Veronica Guzman told LaVoz.com. "We thought he must have got run over and died.
'The following Sunday we went to the cemetery, and Damian recognized his pet. Capitan came up to us, barking and wailing as if he were crying."
Adding to the unusual circumstances, Veronica says the family never brought Capitan to the cemetery before he was discovered there.
"It is a mystery how he managed to find the place," she said.

Cop drags a 77 year old grandmother from her SUV

A local Texas police department is standing by an officer who dragged a 77-year-old grandmother out of her car for speeding after she repeatedly refused to provide her driver's license.
The entire arrest was caught on video by the Keene Police Department.
The woman, Lynn Bedford, of nearby Cleburne, was stopped on Aug. 19 for driving 66 mph in a 50-mph zone.

Some advice here, please.

Hey, does anyone have any first hand experience in converting small propane tanks (like for barbecues) into reserve tanks for compressed air? How hard would it be, and how much air will they hold? I'm figuring a propane tank would hold more air than a similar sized commercial tank due to the thickness of it. Would it be cost effective or should I just go buy one at the local auto parts store?

Predator calling - loud or low?

Dog tales

Had an email conversation tonight with the ol' boy that posted about the mushrooms almost killing his dogs a week or so back and he told me that they recovered faster than he was able to pay the vet bills. I mentioned that all of my dogs' favorite stunt was to wait until I had saved months and months for something I really wanted and then go out and get run over or something so I could spend my money making the vet's house payment instead of wasting it on a new gun or something.
That brought to mind the pup that I once brought home and that motherfucker had no sooner hit the doorstep and he started shitting and puking. Parvo. Godammit, I hadn't even named it yet. It was a free dog but damn, I can't watch any animal suffer, much less a puppy. So I haul the little bastard down to the vet and $800 later I had a lab pup named Evinrude. What really pissed me off was that damned dog was afraid of the water......

Mouthy broad needed to learn when to shut the fuck up

PITTSFIELD -- A local man who police said attacked his mother last December after she yelled at him for eating too much bacon pleaded guilty to two charges on Thursday and was sentenced to four months in jail. In Central Berkshire District Court, 19-year-old Christopher Rougeau of Pittsfield pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and battery and felony witness intimidation, for pushing his mother, grabbing her by the throat and knocking her to the ground, and disabling a phone she was trying to use to call for help. The incident began, according to a Pittsfield Police report, when Rougeau's mother came home and found him eating a large plate of bacon. She said she had been saving the meat for a special breakfast later in the week. Rougeau is already serving a six-month jail sentence for violating probation and his other sentence will run concurrently to that stint. The underlying charge was another assault and battery against his mother in June 2011.

SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — Residents of Surfside Beach are concerned about coyotes in the community.Residents say coyotes have been killing neighborhood cats as well as squirrels and rabbits in recent weeks.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports town council this week authorized the town administrator to spend up to $5,000 to deal with the problem.
The town plans to set traps to capture the coyotes and print fliers to distribute to residents with tips on dealing with the animals.
The Department of Natural Resources says coyotes are not unusual in South Carolina and are found statewide.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Florida -- A teenager is recovering after police say he shot himself in the penis and testicle while cleaning a gun he just bought.
It happened Thursday morning at a home on the 200 block of Verada Street in Port St. Lucie.
Police say 18-year-old Michael Smeriglio first lied to police saying someone shot him while he was walking down the street. After being questioned by police he admitted to accidentally doing it himself.
Doctors say the bullet went through his penis, his left testicle and then lodged itself in his thigh.
Smeriglio told police he bought the gun last month at a party.
While police were investigating at the home where it happened, they discovered marijuana in the house. That led to the arrest of the homeowner Joseph Lamar James, 22, on drug charges.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said in his Democratic National Convention speech that immigrants would find life so intolerable under a Mitt Romney administration that they would, “self-deport.”

“Instead of supporting their dream, Governor Romney wants to make their lives so miserable, so oppressive, so intolerable that they would leave behind the life they’ve built and ‘self-deport’,” he said. “But we believe we’re a better country than that. And thanks to President Obama, as we keep on fighting for the DREAM Act, they can remain in the country they love.”

Really, Villaraigosa? You think so little of the immigrants of this country that they would return to their own much more oppressive, and even dangerous countries, just because the American government didn’t give them free handouts?
Villaraigosa has clearly never seen miserable, oppressive and intolerable, if he thinks an America where immigrants have to work toward their citizenship falls under that category.
